Hi, I’m James.

I’ve always loved a good story. As an undergraduate student I studied creative writing and literature so I could understand the make-up of a meaningful narrative. I used to think some stories are good and some, well… aren’t. It’s easy to disregard a story as ‘boring’ because it didn’t catch our attention or make us feel anything. By the end of that education I understood that ‘bad’ stories are often just poorly-told good stories. They’re misunderstood and not seen well. I began to ask, ‘where is the real story in this boring story?’

This is what led me to become a therapist. Sometimes we don’t know how to tell our own stories until we do the work to understand them. Every person has a profound narrative to tell if they can learn to become more curious, observant, and understand their context. And it just so happens that understanding our own narrative plays a fundamental role in healing from trauma and paving the way toward a deeper relationship with ourselves and the people around us.

With 10+ years experience as a therapist, I feel lucky to be working in a context in which I get to ‘double-dip.’ I’m motivated to be better at my job by the same thing that motivates me to have good, healthy relationships with others and with myself.
